Jarapas
- Andalucian Rugs
The
traditional Andalucian "Jarapa" or rug is a true
example of artisan craftsmanship. Jarapas have been made
in Andalusia since the Arabs introduced the technology and
manufacturing methods in the 12th century and continue to
be produced in the age old way on wooden looms and then
hand finished by local craftsmen.
Jarapas
are truly unique because they are made up of totally recycled
materials from the textiles industry. Each jarapa consists
of at least 80% recycled cotton which makes them warm and
soft yet hardwearing and practical as they can be machine
washed.
Although
available throughout Andalucia, the two most famous areas
of production of this artisan product are Coy near Lorca
in Murcia and Nijar in the region of Almeria. Coy, although
very small is said to be the capital of jarapa production
as this is where the craft originated and welcomes visitors
to watch the traditional production in its museum every
year.
The
range of designs and colours vary as modern ideas are introduced
but the most traditional design and style remain the stripy
ones most commonly known as 'Andina' and 'Delhi'. These
two styles of Jarapa are the most sought after and produced
in Andalucia. The jarapa can be bought in a range of different
sizes from a small bath mat up to very large floor rugs.
They also come in different thicknesses, they can be single
or double sided and also completely reversible, even with
contrasting sides.
Traditionally,
the jarapa was placed between the bed base and the mattress
to protect the mattress from damage by rubbing of the springs,
but nowadays their usage is much more varied. The modern
use for an Andalucian jarapa ranges from beautiful floor
coverings and wall hangings to bed throws and bath mats.
In
modern times, the quality of the materials used has improved
to produce a more hardwearing, thicker, softer product but
just as in days gone by, the striking designs and vibrant
colours have held enormous appeal. The true beauty of the
jarapa however, is the craft. As they are made up of purely
recycled materials, there are no two jarapas the same. They
may be similar in colours and shades and the design may
be the same but each finished product is unique.
Andalucia's
jarapas are environmentally and people friendly, they are
made from recycled materials and produced using age old
methods on traditional machinery which preserves this very
special craft, the future of the area and its artisans.
This, coupled with the individuality of each jarapa ensures
a beautiful, practical, artisan and traditional product
of extremely high quality with its very own place in history,
guaranteed to bring a little piece of the past into your
home.
