ESPARTO
GRASS - authentic, hand woven crafts
Esparto
grass, sometimes called "needle grass" or
"Spanish grass" has been hand woven in Andalucia
for centuries. The fibre is extremely resistant to
shrinkage and stretching and is very hard wearing.
The grass can be found in Southern Spain and also
North Africa with the Spanish variety generally being
regarded as the higher grade. Our esparto grass crafts
are hand woven by "Frasio" he has been weaving
this grass into both ornamental and functional pieces
for over 40 years, a true professional in his field.
Hand
picked from the Andalucian countryside the esparto
grass is cleaned and then woven into some exceptional
artisan craft pieces ranging from baskets, fans, bottle
holders and table centre pieces. Each piece is hand
made to order, completely unique and only available
through Orce Serrano Hams.

Twin
Esparto Grass Basket
This double or 'potato basket,' is a delightful
example of traditional Spanish craftsmanship and
practicality. The 'agüeras' was commonly
used to aid the Spanish housewife or worker in
the campo with the unenviable task of potato peeling.
The potatoes would go in one side and the peelings
in the other ready for depositing on the compost
pile. Despite the practical, slightly mundane
image of times gone by, this style of basket is
making a comeback and is extremely sought after
due to its unique design and quality finish. It
is designed for innumerable uses throughout the
home and is made to last. It is an impressive
piece of workmanship measuring approximately 48
x 34 x 20 cms. |
